Meet Etika and his family who bought some land in Vanua Levu, found a lot of coffee growing there. He made contact with us. We suggested he come and learn how to process coffee. 2 days later a Taxi pulled up at our headquarters in Sigatoka and out jumped Etika ready to learn about processing coffee.

He is one motivated individual! His family and him have been sending us updates on the progress ever since. We work with amazing people like this every day to ensure we all get our cup of coffee each morning.

Bula Coffee

The Other Guys

Wild-harvested and organic. Grown naturally in Fiji’s forests, untouched by chemicals.

Mass-produced on cleared land. Often grown with approved pesticides.

Empowers local farmers. Works directly with villages to create sustainable livelihoods.

Prioritises profits over people. Farmers see little return for their hard work.

Small-batch roasted for peak freshness. Roasted in Fiji to bring out the best flavour.

Factory-processed for mass production. Coffee loses freshness before it reaches you.

Truly sustainable from start to finish. No deforestation, no artificial irrigation, just nature’s bounty.

Even organic farms clear land. Sustainability often comes second to production.

We shake the hands that pick the coffee

Imported with little transparency. Sourcing and sustainability remain unclear.

Coffee with a purpose. Every sip supports Fijian communities.

Just another coffee brand. No real impact beyond the bottom line.

Thank you to our Harvesters

Every week we leave early to set up, then we wait, slowly but surely truck load after truck load of fresh cherries show up. We weigh and pay.

Then it's back to our HQ to pulp and set out to dry. On this day we bought over 4 tones of coffee from almost 200 Fijian Harvesters.

Because some of our Harvesters are so far from town, it's near impossible to get fresh cherries from them during harvest season. So these ladies dry them and keep them as parchment. We often get calls from as far away as the Nasikawa district that they are on the way.

Shoutout to all our Harvesters who hand pick the coffee we share with the world, we couldn't do it without you!!

FAQs

Bula Coffee Q & A

What does wild grown coffee actually mean?

For centuries, coffee has been grown on farms and estates across the globe. These managed farms nurture coffee trees from seedlings through to mature plants that produce coffee cherries for harvesting. Wild grown coffee refers to coffee trees that grow naturally. It is most well-known to occur in Ethiopia and other parts of Africa.

There are many reasons why this is important. Wild strains of coffee are more resistant to disease and require no use of harmful pesticides or artificial soils to maintain them. The flavour profile is also unique, taking notes from the vegetation and soil they grow in. One of Fiji’s best kept secrets is the surprisingly plentiful growth of coffee trees which flourish in the rich volcanic soil alongside cacao, coconut and wild flowers.

Wild grown coffee is the definition of sustainable coffee production but it does come at a cost. The limited scalability means every cup of coffee should be savoured as something precious.

Is wild grown coffee like Bula Coffee more sustainable than other growing methods?

Most definitely, our coffee is sourced from remote areas of Fiji where coffee grows naturally. The beans are grown in the bush the way nature intended them to grow, no chemicals or anything added to them, just sunlight, rain and the goodness from the Fiji soil.

By comparison, conventional and organic farming involve clearing and cultivating the land, which strips away nutrients that must later be replaced — often with fertilisers and, in conventional farming, harmful pesticides.

We would argue that there is no other method as sustainable and one with the ecosystem than gathering what nature provides.

How does Bula Coffee help local communities?

Each year we support close to 5000 people from across Fiji with a reliable income, paying them well for their hard work. They are the Bula Coffee Family. So everyday you drink your delicious Bula brew you are doing far more than enjoying a great cup of coffee! You are helping Bula Coffee generate income for people in remote communities who are now generating a reliable income from a resource that previously fell to the ground to rot.

We work with the Ministry of Agriculture Fiji to build the infrastructure necessary for local communities to thrive. This year the Ministry kindly donated 1000 coffee seedlings that will be distributed out to our farmers later in the year. Together we are committed to continuing to set up an industry that the farmers own and benefit from. We are grateful to the government for engaging with us to help ensure the industry continues to expand. We would like to give a special thanks to Mr Sakiusa Tubuna from the PM office for facilitating the delivery of these plants

> How long does it take from cherry to cup?

It takes 6-8 months from the time the cherry is plucked from the tree until it ends up freshly roasted in the coffee bag delivered to your door. There are many steps along the way starting with mother nature doing her thing before the beautiful ripe cherries are hand picked, sundried, batch roasted coffee and packaged up.

Villagers rewarded for picking coffee beans.

Very informative coffee tour hosted by an excellent Fijian lady.

Various coffees were served and the processing of beans to table was an experience especially once you were aware that the village growers were rewarded and prospered from their work of picking the beans.

Highly recommend!

Informative and interesting coffee farm tour! The owner was our tour guide and so was able to share many colorful and interesting stories about building the business, trial and error with growing and gathering coffee growing wild in the interior, working with local communities, and life in Fiji as an immigrant from New Zealand. The coffee was delicious and the property is beautiful. Highly recommend the visit!

Amazing coffee tour including tastings

Amazing experience. Dee was so friendly and knowledgeable about the coffee process and history of Bula coffee.

As well as a tour, the price includes tasting Bula coffee brewed in 3 different ways and you take home a 200g bag of Bula coffee (beans or ground) each.

I definitely recommend this tour and supporting the great work Bula coffee are doing.

Big thanks to Dee for making this such a memorable experience!
